Brian asked.
Board members debated multiple options. One view favored using the board’s aggregate evaluation score: "I would say that it is a collaborative from the total score of all of the board members," a member responded. Another board member proposed requiring that each board member individually rate the superintendent as highly effective to trigger an automatic renewal, arguing that the language should not let a single dissenting rating block the extension.
Board members also discussed alternatives, including triggering a board vote when ratings diverge. Miss Russell emphasized collective governance: "We are one board with one voice. Five of us collectively make up one voice." Other members said domain-level concerns could be addressed during the evaluation instrument review, rather than blocking an automatic renewal if overall ratings are high.
Superintendent Maine addressed the board directly, urging a firm demonstration of board support. "For me as your superintendent... if you rate me highly effective, it comes with an automatic contract extension," Maine said, adding that superintendents are difficult to replace and that stability matters during contract negotiations and budget work.
Board members agreed to place the contract language on the agenda for the next meeting for formal consideration and possible vote. Diane (staff) was asked to add the item for next week.
