Patrick County schools approve storm‑drain addition and report multiple summer construction projects

The Patrick County School Board on June 17 approved adding a proposed storm‑drain installation to the division's 1% capital projects list and heard construction updates from Superintendent Wood.
Superintendent Wood told the board the Blue Ridge Elementary School project, funded through the School Construction Assistance Program and local 1% funds, is progressing and that flooring, subfloors and related work are on schedule for completion in July. He said the division's recent track work resulted in a purchase order for $471,920 after core sampling, representing about $200,000 in savings versus initial estimates and an estimated paving start in mid‑July.
Wood said baseball field lighting work is expected to start in July but that some contractor equipment remains on site. He reported a bid increase for softball drainage to $64,238.84 but said savings from the track reduced net capital pressure. Wood described an ADA ramp project intended to provide direct accessible entry to the gymnasium and auditorium, with an estimated completion date of June 30.
Separately, Wood presented a proposal to install an additional storm drain that would connect into an existing drain; he said the firm bid for that work was approximately $32,000 and asked the board to include the item in the 1% capital purchases. A board member moved and the board approved the addition by voice vote.
Wood also described plans to replace aging educational mobile units, add exterior restrooms and a concession stand at the track (those buildings previously were donated and are past their life expectancy). He said those replacements would be paid with local capital funds. He noted the sheriff’s office has expressed interest in surplus buildings once replaced and that any donation would be the subject of a future surplus/disposition agenda item.
Board members praised maintenance staff and the custodial crews for summer work. The board approved the motion to include the storm drain in the 1% capital purchases by voice vote; no roll‑call tally was recorded in the minutes.
The superintendent and facilities committee also reported the window‑film and school security window treatments were scheduled for completion around June 25 and that epoxy floor coatings were being applied at Patrick Springs to reduce long‑term maintenance.
