Board member raises concern about ADAP program delivery and parent notification

During the June 26 Coffee County Schools work session, a board member said their grandson had not completed part of the state’s ADAP (Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program) online coursework, and that parents were not sufficiently informed about the requirement when students reached the driving age.

The board member said they attended open house events but were not told ADAP was part of the course sequence that could affect students’ documentation for the Department of Motor Vehicles. The member said their grandson did not finish the online module and had lost access credentials.

Administrators explained that in recent years the state moved ADAP from face-to-face instruction to an online course. They said students typically take the course in ninth grade but may not be old enough to need the certification until later; by then students may have lost logins or certificates. As a result, administrators said the district plans to allow students to take the module online from home and to coordinate the health and PE department to ensure completion.

Administrators also flagged that documentation issues commonly surface at the DMV when students request driver credentials and that improved communication to parents is warranted. The board member called for stronger parent notification at open houses and earlier reminders to ensure students complete required modules and retain access information.

No formal action was taken; staff said they would review communication protocols and work to ensure students can access the online ADAP module.
