Board thanks Superintendent Michael Robbins for service; final day June 30

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District Board of Education publicly recognized Superintendent Michael Robbins on June 25 and thanked him for his leadership ahead of his departure. Board members and staff listed program and outcome improvements attributed to his tenure.

The board’s recognition cited several accomplishments: increased graduation rates, reduced the number of students off track to graduate by roughly half, declines in suspensions, expansion of AVID at Ketchikan High School, implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports for interventions, placement of social workers at every school, efforts to sustain pre-K programs through funding challenges, advocacy that contributed to increased state funding in 2024 and 2025, and work with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough to address the district’s health-care debt.

The district said Superintendent Robbins was selected by the Alaska Council of School Administrators to represent Alaska and to give testimony in Washington, D.C., and the board wished him and his family well in his next position. The superintendent’s final day with the district was announced as June 30.

The board’s formal recognition was offered at the start of the meeting; members and staff thanked Robbins for steady leadership through complex challenges and public advocacy at the state level.
