The Huron City Commission on July 7 approved use of remaining 2025 capital-asset funds to purchase a new call-recording system for the city dispatch center.
City staff reported the dispatch center received $70,964 in capital-asset funding for radio upgrades in 2025; the radio upgrade cost $42,734.97, leaving about $28,229.03 remaining. Dispatch supervisors requested authority to use those remaining funds to replace a call-recording system purchased in February 2018 that staff said is failing intermittently, in part after the city upgraded to Windows 11.
"...our dispatch supervisor is requesting permission to purchase a new call recording system. The current one in use was purchased in 02/2018. It's about 7 years old. Having some issues with both parts for the hardware, and then we're having issues with the software," the chief said. The chief (identified in the meeting as Derek) said the recorder is not reliably saving calls and outside support is sometimes required.
Commissioners discussed whether the state is involved with 911 equipment funding; the chief said some radio upgrades receive state assistance but that the call recorder itself is not funded by the state. The commission approved the capital asset purchase on a roll-call vote.
Staff said ordering software and hardware sooner is advisable to avoid longer lead times and higher prices.
