Council OKs Public Works building floor plan, asks for engineered storage floor

The Parker City Council approved a proposed floor plan for a new Public Works building at the central pump station and directed staff to include an engineered second-floor storage option in future cost estimates.

During the July 1 meeting Public Works Director Gary Machado presented a concept plan for a multipurpose building intended to house equipment, provide indoor repair space and offer contingency lodging and facilities for staff during extended emergency operations. Councilors discussed vehicle clearance, secure equipment storage and whether the exterior should be masonry veneer or a less expensive metal building with partial veneer.

Council Member Colleen Haddard moved to approve the floor plan and to include an engineered second-floor for storage; Council Member Roxanne Balder seconded the motion. The motion carried on the council floor.

Council members asked staff for a project cost estimate to be returned at a future meeting. Machado said some utility/bond funds from prior projects and interest earnings currently sit in the utility construction fund and could be applied toward the project; councilors requested a timetable and clearer funding options before construction is authorized.

The motion approved the plan as a concept; staff will now obtain design-level cost estimates and return to council with funding options and a recommended procurement approach.
