Newark officials plan collaborative after‑school program; district aims to keep services local

The superintendent said the district ran an RFP and identified a private company but also heard community preference for internal, locally run programs. “We’re gonna try to take a stab at it,” the superintendent said, describing early concepts such as a rotating schedule of arts, STEAM and language programs and a possible shared van to move instructors and equipment between sites.
Officials said funding for initial programming exists and that the district and city will collaborate on stable funding and operations. Committee members urged the district to prioritize interventions that support academic outcomes and noted that targeted after‑school help can be particularly valuable for students whose families lack resources at home.
One member proposed inviting a model program (a Reading Pals initiative used elsewhere) to brief local community groups and explore local collaboration. Committee members asked staff to return with a more developed plan and implementation timeline and indicated support for continuing the item on future agendas so city and school leaders can coordinate public outreach and fundraising.
