Plainview ISD trustees approved renewal of the district's transportation contract with First Student, which includes a 4.5% rate increase, by a 5‑0 vote.
District staff said First Student absorbed fuel costs under the contract and that the company added nine activity buses to the fleet after charter shortages the previous year. The presenter said adding nine activity buses should reduce charter expenses for band, athletics and other extracurricular travel.
The administration described the district's route structure: 23 regular home‑to‑school routes, six special‑education routes (morning and afternoon), two midday runs, and 15 additional runs for extracurricular and vocational trips. Staff reported a single minor accident over the period under review and said drivers sometimes make discretionary on‑route adjustments to help students.
Trustees asked about fleet composition and the presenter confirmed nine activity buses are in the updated fleet and one bus is being modified. A board member praised First Student's performance and the incremental improvement represented by the activity buses. The recommendation to renew the contract was moved, seconded and approved 5‑0.
