Library director reports summer programming, attendance and interlibrary loan increases

Library staff reported on summer reading signup, children’s programs, a summer concert and an intern donation; attendance and interlibrary loan activity rose in May, and libraries added a ‘‘library of things’’ item for circulation.
Library staff provided an update on summer programs, circulation and attendance at the Newcastle and Upton libraries.
The director said the summer reading theme is “Color Our World,” with signups underway and programming running through August. Programs reported included Lego events, an author visit (CK Van Dam), a concert (Aaron Fowler), puppet shows and a library scavenger-style “dragon quest” for children. The director said Newcastle had 38 summer reading signups and Upton had 60 (signups across both branches were reported). Staff noted strong program attendance at a recent Lego event and increased interlibrary loan activity, with more than 100 books being sent to other libraries.
The library has added items to a “library of things” collection (pickleball paddles and balls) and reported about 1,583 patrons upstairs and 194 children in downstairs programs during May. Staff also thanked commissioners for funding a heating-system upgrade and said air-conditioning questions remained under review.
No board action was required on the library report; commissioners asked a few budget questions and thanked library staff for the update.
