Water-board budget committee reports progress on meter program, master plan and capital improvements

Councilor Slater reported to the North Bend City Council on June 10 that the Water Board budget committee met on June 5 and will reconvene June 20 to finish budget consideration. The committee reviewed the water-master plan, a water-rate study and the capital-improvement program.
Slater said the utility has installed automated meter-reading (AMR) devices on roughly 7,000 meters and plans to install another 1,000 this year. He said the AMR technology allows crews to read nearly 800 meters per hour, a significant increase over manual reads. The committee discussed capital priorities, rate proposals and service to customers outside city boundaries; Slater noted that customers outside the city pay a premium for service under current arrangements.
The budget committee will meet again June 20 to review the remaining materials, proposed capital projects and budget proposals before finalizing recommendations to the council.
