Town reports backflow protection progress; some irrigation systems remain untested

Town staff updated the council on the Interlaken cross-connection control program and backflow prevention compliance during the June 3 meeting.
Staff said the town has 43 occupied lots with irrigation systems; of those, 39 have an installed backflow prevention device and 17 of those devices have been tested. For fire suppression systems, staff reported that all systems in town have backflow prevention devices. The report indicated some individual properties still require devices or testing and that the June 30 deadline was in effect for compliance.
Staff said homeowners do not need to activate irrigation systems to comply with testing requirements; turning on the main water line for the plumbing system is sufficient for many checks. Council members encouraged residents to complete testing and to arrange inspections; staff said they will continue outreach to property owners and add inspectors as available.
The council discussed recurring reminders about the program and the administrative burden of tracking inspections and tests; staff said they are working to improve record-keeping and will follow up with property owners who lack devices or test records.
