Human Services board reports Narcan vending machine and supportive-services savings

At its monthly report the Manitowoc County Human Services Board said its supportive-department program for adults with chronic mental illness produces estimated savings of $779,000 per year in group home costs.
Supervisor Bridal reported to the full board that adult protective-services referrals have increased and that finances look promising despite potential costly youth placements stemming from recent youth-justice referrals. The Human Services Board also described an overdose-prevention step: a Narcan vending machine placed outside the Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (NEWAHEC).
Public Health supplied the initial Narcan doses and fentanyl test strips for the vending machine, Bridal said, and the Human Services Department will provide ongoing supplies through the department’s Narcan direct grant. The board reported the WIC caseload numbers for April and noted planning for mental health awareness activities.
The Human Services Board scheduled its next meeting for May 22 at 4:15 p.m. in the department boardroom off J Street in downtown Manitowoc.
