Council reports code enforcement actions: unpermitted additions and conditional business license

Council members reported code-enforcement activity after the planning commission identified unauthorized construction and unpermitted home additions.

Councilmember Hanover said the planning commission found an unpermitted structure being built on the town's main road and that the property owner has been asked to submit for a building permit. For a separate case, the council reported a homeowner had added to their home without a permit; town staff contacted Hyde Park building officials who inspected and posted a tag on the structure, which prevents further work until the owner satisfies applicable building requirements.

Council members discussed a commercial applicant, Salus Shed. Hanover said the planning commission approved a zoning permit layout for Salus Shed but noted this is separate from the business license process; the council said it had conditionally approved the business license on several conditions and that staff would sign the license when requirements are met.

Council emphasized that building additions without permits violate state law and that property owners must obtain permits before adding habitable space. Staff will follow up with building officials and the property owners to enforce compliance and to process any permit applications submitted.
