Temple’s development and EDC representatives told the reinvestment zone board on May 28 that the industrial market remains active and that a major advanced‑manufacturing investment is proceeding in the zone.
Staff reported that the project initially announced at about $110 million has increased in scope and is expected to total about $150 million, and that construction is underway with public hard‑hat tours and periodic community engagement. The presenter said the phase‑2 decision appears likely in coming months and that the project’s technology focus—advanced manufacturing with robotics—will require higher‑skilled workers.
The EDC team said it is refreshing the zone’s target‑industry analysis to reflect recent market shifts, supply‑chain incentives and international recruitment activity. Staff noted increased interest from overseas firms and said the refreshed analysis will inform the zone’s business-attraction work for the next two to five years.
Presenters highlighted training partnerships with local education providers, including Temple College and area K–12 CTE programs, as critical to aligning workforce skills with prospective employers’ needs. Economic-development staff said coordination with college and K–12 programs aims to expand robotics and advanced‑manufacturing training to support higher‑wage jobs coming to the area.
Board members and staff emphasized the importance of prepared sites and noted that smaller-footprint but high‑value projects (e.g., 10 acres with $120–140 million investment) are under active consideration for the zone. Staff said the development corporation and EDC will continue outreach and target‑industry work in the coming months.
