Ada County EMS approves training agreements, highlights summer safety and driver training
Summary
The Ada County EMS district approved three employee training agreements and discussed summer safety outreach after an in‑house ambulance driving exercise during the county EMS academy.
The Ada County Board acting as the Board of County Emergency Medical Services on May 23 approved three agreements that allow employees to attend advanced training programs, including an Idaho State University program and advanced EMT courses. Those agreements include employment retention provisions under which employees who leave before an agreed period may be required to reimburse training costs.
Sean Rain, an EMS representative, told the board the agreements are intended to allow EMT‑basic staff to progress to higher certifications (advanced EMT) and to protect the county’s investment in training by requiring employees who leave early to reimburse tuition or related costs.
Driver training and summer safety EMS staff reported on the department’s recent training academy for county officials and staff. The academy included hands‑on ambulance driving practice, a serpentine backing‑exercise and ATV familiarization; staff and commissioners participated in training drives to better understand the operational and liability challenges of operating large EMS vehicles. Rain and other staff cautioned that backing large vehicles through tight courses is difficult for drivers accustomed to smaller passenger cars.
Staff also reminded the board that the summer season is typically the county’s busiest period for EMS calls. The EMS office said it plans public messaging and press releases focused on heat exposure, water safety (rivers and canals) and safe driving over the upcoming holiday season; staff referenced participation in a “100 Deadliest Days” public awareness piece encouraging careful driving.
