Horizon Elementary PTA reports successful fundraisers, says volunteer help needed

Riley Hannan, president of the Horizon Elementary PTA, told the Murray School District Board of Education on Oct. 2 that the PTA met its fundraising goal and is planning several upcoming student events, but struggles to recruit volunteers given the school's large enrollment.
Hannan said the PTA's back-to-school carnival was a free event that drew a strong turnout and that the recent fun run fundraiser'—its sole fundraiser'—met its goal. Students will be rewarded with a special assembly the PTA is planning. Hannan said the fun run includes an obstacle course designed by the school's physical education teacher to reinforce PE skills and promote physical activity.
Hannan listed upcoming events such as Reflections (arts program), a spelling bee and a science fair and said the PTA tries to provide opportunities that engage a broad range of students. She said the PTA faces a recurring challenge: "with the student body being as big as it is, it makes it a challenge to plan all the events that we have to plan within a budget and keep it safe," and that volunteer recruitment has been limited despite many families.
Board members thanked Hannan and Horizon student participants for presenting; no formal action was taken on the report.
The PTA also referenced support from school administration and teachers, whom Hannan praised for stepping in to help run events.
