Board hears update on elementary fresh fruits and vegetables program; no formal evaluation data presented

Board members asked for data on the district's fresh fruits and vegetables program for elementary schools and were told staff will return with information on surveys or feedback.

During the consent-agenda discussion Ms. Ashley asked, "how effective is the measured, or is there a student survey on the improved food choices and what's the results?" Chief Jennings answered that the program involves community members teaching students about fruits and vegetables and giving students chances to try produce they might not have tried before. Jennings said, "We haven't received any complaints about our students participating in the fruits and vegetables program. I would say the the biggest challenge that we have about that would be we wanna have fruits and vegetables available, for our students if we could every day, all day during the time that they're having instruction...but we have restrictions on our ability to do that, just because of, you know, instructional time and making sure students are staying focused. But we have heard, back from our schools that the students absolutely love having the opportunity to learn about some of those fruits and vegetables and then, of course, partake in those."

Staff did not present districtwide survey results at the meeting. Chief Jennings said staff would follow up with the board clerk and superintendent to distribute any surveys or feedback the district has collected.
