Dane County board adopts resolution supporting gun violence prevention and youth-focused programs

The Dane County Board on June 26 adopted Resolution 2025-054 recognizing national Gun Violence Awareness Month and pledging support for public-health-led and community-driven efforts to prevent gun violence countywide.
Supervisor Rose presented the resolution, citing local and state statistics included in the text: an average of 38 Dane County residents die by firearms each year (about 80 percent by suicide, the remainder by homicide or accident), and state figures showing firearm deaths among children and teens. The resolution calls for partnering with Public Health Madison and Dane County to expand violence-prevention programming, education, intervention, and support services and directs that copies be sent to local and state leaders.
The board unanimously approved the resolution on a voice vote after Supervisor Rose moved and Supervisor Burushak seconded the motion.
Public comment included a 16-year-old volunteer with Students Demand Action, Stella Oshadatz, who described the group’s advocacy for legislation such as universal background checks, waiting periods for handgun purchases, extreme risk protection orders and regulation of ghost guns. Stella said young people have been personally affected in her community and urged continued advocacy.
Supervisor Rose thanked public health staff and youth leaders and said the resolution is intended to expand community and public-health approaches to reduce firearm deaths and injuries across Dane County.
