Board approves three‑year lease for Indigent Defense office space

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners approved a three‑year lease on June 26 for office space to support the county’s newly established Department of Indigent Defense.
Brian Filter, director of Indigent Defense, told the board the leased space would house the department’s two county employees and provide a meeting and work space for contracted public defenders who are required to have an office in Douglas County when they serve county clients. Filter said confidentiality for privileged client communications was an important reason for securing private office space.
The lease with Awesome Ant Enterprises LLC begins July 1, 2025, at an initial rate of $1,374.45 per month with annual adjustments. Filter said the State Department of Indigent Defense will reimburse county costs for the office space to the extent allowed by state reimbursement rules for indigent defense.
Commissioner Dan Gardner moved approval; Commissioner Robert Tarkanian seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Why this matters: Nevada law and county contract rules require accessible office space for contracted indigent defense providers and for county indigent defense staff to serve clients and maintain confidential records. The county said state reimbursement covers eligible costs.
