Washington County IT reports progress on cloud migration and network upgrades

At a Washington County Public Works Committee meeting on 2025-06-18, IT staff reported progress on multiple infrastructure projects, including finishing an access-database redesign, continuing migration to cloud services, and completing network switch and wireless access-point upgrades at the Public Agency Center.
The updates matter because the changes affect county capacity to share data across departments and maintain secure operations, county IT staff said. The committee heard that the work will be phased and will continue over multiple years.
Joel, an IT staff member who presented the quarterly report, said the county is down to one remaining application in the redesigned access-database initiative and is awaiting collaboration with the county highway department to finish that work. He said the county is “continuing on” with efforts to move data to cloud services such as Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Teams and described that migration as a longer, multi-year project because of the volume of data and interdependencies.
Joel told the committee the county is replacing network switches at the Public Agency Center and expects to finish the third-floor work next week, which will complete replacement of switches on all floors ahead of schedule. He also said wireless access points that provide Wi-Fi in the building—about five to six years old—are staged for replacement.
Joel credited Eric, an IT staff member, with leading the switch project and with advancing the county's vulnerability-management program, including internal processes for security patching of computers. Joel thanked Eric during his presentation.
The committee also heard about shared-services onboarding: IT staff are finishing final tasks to bring recently joined municipalities onto county-supported Office 365 services, including migrating mail from legacy providers for the towns of Farmington, Keywascom and Aaron. Joel said that after onboarding finishes the team will move into monitoring and capacity analysis.
No committee action or vote was taken on IT items during the meeting. Staff said ongoing work and future budget considerations will be presented in later materials.
The committee moved on to other agenda items after the IT update; the next Public Works Committee meeting was scheduled for 07/16/2025.
