Derby recognizes five work-based learning graduates who trained in public works

Derby officials recognized five students from the Derby Public Schools work-based learning program during the May 13 council meeting. The students completed placements across public-works divisions including parks, utilities, streets and facilities, city staff said.

Tom Kyle, assistant public works director, described the program as a paid elective-credit opportunity that matched students’ high-school coursework with hands-on placements. Assistant director Kyle introduced the students by name—Ethan Jeffrey (electrician), Drayson Marsh (street operator), Leah Rogers (parks), Courtney Smith (lab analyst) and Lawrence Snead (lab analyst)—and said one student, Drayson Marsh, will begin full-time employment with the city at the end of the month.

Derby Public Schools leader Sandy Barton said the program helps students build employability skills through interviews, time sheets and supervisor evaluations; staff noted the program is expanding from five interns this year to eight next year with a goal of 10. Students described gaining technical skills and work ethic and presented project summaries to staff. The council thanked city staff and school partners for supervising interns and helping connect students to local employment opportunities.
