Custer County board authorizes RFP for contracted IT services

The Custer County Board of Commissioners voted May 8 to issue a request for proposals to evaluate contracted information-technology (IT) services for the county.
Commission staff said the county faces growing IT demands — notably from the sheriff’s office — and that the county’s current cybersecurity posture is a weak point. The county plans to solicit proposals that could include continuous monitoring, server and endpoint management, cybersecurity services and part-time on-site support. Finance staff and county legal counsel reviewed a draft scope before the board discussed moving forward.
Board members said the county has received anecdotal estimates and hopes to see proposals that will provide “hard numbers” to compare against the cost of hiring full-time staff. One commissioner estimated the county might expect proposals in the range of $150,000 per year — roughly the cost of two full-time IT positions — though staff noted that figure is an estimate, not a commitment.
The board moved and seconded a motion to publish the RFP, post it on the county website and in local public notices, and solicit proposals from known vendor contacts. Commissioners and members of the public discussed co-managed service models and the role of existing county IT staff; staff said day-to-day ticketing would be co-managed between a contractor and current county IT personnel.
The motion passed by voice vote; commissioners present voted in the affirmative. Staff said they will post the RFP publicly and contact known vendors to solicit proposals.
