Monroe County School Board appoints Ed Tierney as superintendent

The Monroe County School board voted at its meeting to appoint Ed Tierney as the next superintendent of Monroe County Schools and authorized the board chair and the district attorney to begin negotiating his employment contract.

The appointment follows a national search conducted with the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) that produced four finalists after an application pool from multiple states, community forums and written and video answers from semifinalists. Board members said Tierney rose above other finalists for a combination of reasons, including a written 90-day plan he provided, experience with exceptional student education (ESE) and a record of building higher-level coursework access for students.

Board members who spoke during the discussion said they were persuaded by Tierney’s readiness to meet the district’s immediate needs and by his plan to relocate to the Keys if hired. In a phone call placed during the meeting, Ed Tierney told the board he was “so grateful” and said he and his wife look forward to joining the community.

FSBA ran the public process that included an online community survey, three community meet-and-greets and one student focus group. Board members said the search brought a higher-than-usual caliber of applicants and that public input and written plans from finalists helped shape their views.

Members cited several attributes that influenced the vote: Tierney’s emphasis on inclusion and supports for diverse learners based on his ESE background; his stated approach to learn the district before making staffing changes; and a 90-day plan board members said showed intent to meet principals and staff across the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys. Some board members also noted the candidate’s nine years of military service; during board discussion that experience prompted questions from some community members about a possible “military style” approach, but board members who met with Tierney said he emphasized teamwork and credited teachers rather than imposing an authoritarian style.

Board member discussion also addressed a local perspective: several members acknowledged concerns raised by residents who wanted local deputy- and assistant-level leaders to be considered for the top job, noting that a “grow your own” leadership path is important. One board member explicitly raised the point that long-serving local staff should see a credible chance at promotion. Board members said that concern did not on its own outweigh the strengths they saw in Tierney’s candidacy.

A motion to hire Ed Tierney passed on a roll call vote with all board members present voting in favor. The board then voted to authorize the chair and the district attorney to negotiate contract terms and salary with Tierney.

After the vote the board placed a live phone call to Tierney, who said he appreciated the opportunity, thanked his family and colleagues and said he looked forward to joining Monroe County Schools. The board said lawyers and leadership would proceed with contract negotiations and return to the board with a proposed contract and next steps.
