Commission hears administrative updates: three plats approved, material‑site tracking progress and first counter permit application

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Planning Commission on May 12 received several administrative updates from the plat committee and the planning director.
Commissioner Gillum reported the plat committee reviewed three plats that evening and approved all three. The commission noted the upcoming plat committee meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the date announced.
Director Ruffner (Planning Director) updated the commission on implementation of a new ordinance that took effect last October requiring tracking of material sites. Ruffner said borough staff, together with colleagues at the river center, have been working through a backlog of prior permitted and lapsed material sites that require five‑year renewals. He said the department is making “really good progress” on catching up and that staff received the borough’s first application for a counter permit under the new code; the director said he will report to the commission when counter permits begin to be issued administratively.
Ruffner also noted that one plat matter that had an exception denied in January is scheduled to return as a final plat at an upcoming plat committee meeting. There were no public comments on these administrative items.
Commissioners offered brief procedural comments and thanks to staff at the end of the meeting and adjourned.
