The Fulton County Board of Commissioners on May 7 instructed county management to convert electric-vehicle (EV)–designated parking spaces at county library facilities where no charger has been installed to other uses — for example, accessible or senior parking — on a district-by-district, as-needed basis.
Why it matters: Commissioners said residents and library users have complained about marked EV spaces that lack chargers and are frequently unused or viewed as special treatment. Commissioners discussed whether county capital funds might have paid for chargers earlier in the library bond cycle but were told that library bond funds were allocated to building and renovation needs and that EV charging infrastructure was not part of the original capital plan.
What was approved: Commissioner Dana Thorne moved to convert EV-designated spaces without charging equipment to other uses; Vice Chairman Bob Ellis seconded. Commissioners accepted a friendly amendment to perform conversions as needed or warranted in consultation with district offices and library leadership. The motion passed 5–0.
Costs and next steps: County staff said removal or replacement of signage is the principal cost and that a change could be handled with minimal expense and reused sign poles if the county later installs charging infrastructure. Staff said they would coordinate with library leadership and district commissioners on timing and site-specific choices.
What to watch: Any future county decisions to install charging stations, vendor agreements, and grant opportunities; staff said they continue to pursue grant and vendor options for EV chargers but have not secured a funded, countywide roll-out.
