Hernando County Schools recognizes veteran and social worker William Kiddo

The Hernando County School Board on May 6 recognized William Kiddo, a U.S. Army veteran and a school social worker assigned to Deltona Elementary School, for his military service and work with students and families.

Jill Colossa, director of student services, introduced Kiddo and described his background: he served as a petroleum supply specialist in the U.S. Army, completed training at Fort Sill and Fort Lee and was stationed at Fort Riley; after military service he earned a master’s degree in social work and spent a decade in child protective services before joining Hernando County Schools. ‘‘His work as a social worker reflects compassion, advocacy, and an unyielding dedication to the well-being of others,’’ Colossa said.

Kiddo told the board he had experienced recent health issues but expressed gratitude for colleagues and his family; Julie Sweeney, principal at Deltona Elementary, praised Kiddo’s work, saying he ‘‘goes above and beyond’’ for students and families, including assistance with insurance and other support services.

The recognition was presented during the meeting’s awards and recognitions segment; no board action accompanied the presentation.
