Midway seeks quotes after repeated sewer backups at Town Hall

City staff reported two recent sewer failures at Town Hall that interrupted public use and caused flooding in building foyers during events. Staff said the system has multiple ‘‘bellies’’ (sags) and aging pipe materials — including clay and metal sections — and that past temporary repairs had already been performed by contractors.

Staff told the council the first significant backup occurred during an auditorium production, forcing the closure of town hall restrooms and redirecting visitors to the community center. The pipes were previously partially rehabilitated with HDPE runs pulled into the metal at one point, but staff said additional bellies and failures have recurred and that camera inspection was not possible because of the blockages.

Councilmembers directed staff to obtain quotes and estimates for a more durable repair that will avoid repeated short‑term fixes. Staff noted the short service run behind the community center is about 40 feet and could require replacement to reach the main. No dollar estimate was provided at the meeting; staff said they would present quotes when available.

In discussion, staff and public works representatives described the likely causes as age, prior pull‑in installation that left voids and poor compaction, and failing materials. No formal motion or expenditure was approved at the meeting; staff were asked to gather estimates and to report back.
