Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201’s board approved purchasing Wilson Foundations Level 3 materials to add the third-grade component to the district’s existing K–2 phonics program.
Staff told the board the district had previously purchased the K–2 portion of Wilson Foundations but did not buy the third-grade level; that gap left some phonics skills uncovered for students progressing to higher grades. The purchased Level 3 materials provide teacher resources, physical manipulatives and a digital platform (referred to as the Fun Hub) to support whole-group and small-group instruction.
District staff said most instructional materials are included in the purchase; the only significant additional cost is student consumables — sets sold in packs — estimated at about $4,000 annually. Staff said the district plans to allocate some existing ELA minutes and elements of small-group intervention time (CST) to support implementation and will provide teacher access and training before the next school year.
Board members asked about the program timeline, previous decisions not to purchase the third-grade component and whether a pilot was necessary. Staff responded they did not pilot another vendor because the district already uses the K–2 Foundations materials and that adding Level 3 preserves instructional continuity.
The board voted to approve the purchase; staff listed follow-up tasks including buying student consumables and scheduling teacher training.
