Queen Anne's County public works operator praises training, benefits during public comment

Clara Wilson, an equipment operator with the Queen Anne's County Department of Public Works, spoke during the meeting's public comment period and described day-to-day duties, workplace training and benefits.

“I work for the Department of Public Works as an equipment operator. I've been here for about 4 months,” Wilson said, describing a rotating workload that can include trimming, tar-and-chip, trash collection, plowing and mowing. “My supervisor is very patient with me and everyone else is learning.”

Wilson said the department emphasizes safety and training and described the time-off structure as helpful for managing medical appointments. “The time off, the way that it's structured, the way you earn it, it's great. It's really helpful especially because I have a lot of doctor's appointments and they're very lenient with that,” she said.

She also spoke positively about pay and benefits, saying, “Benefits are no joke and it's really not that bad of a job.” Wilson added that while there are complaints at any job, she found relatively few at her workplace.
