Milan board adopts revised student dress code; administrators will set enforcement procedures

The Milan Special School District Board on April 28 approved a revised student dress code policy (6.31) by a 4'to—2 vote after extended discussion over enforcement and how dress-code violations would affect class attendance and assessments.

Miss Biggs moved to approve the policy; Mr. Mallard seconded. Supporters said survey results from parents and input from school administrators favored the changes. Opponents expressed concern that removing enumerated progressive penalties from policy could lead to inconsistent enforcement and unintended academic consequences if students miss class while resolving dress-code violations.

Administrators told the board they would use administrative procedures and school-level discretion to provide escalation steps, replacement clothing or temporary solutions when parents cannot be reached. The superintendent and principals present said they were confident administrative procedures could ensure consistent, fair application across the district.

The adopted policy removes specific stepwise sanctions from the board-level policy and leaves details such as repeated-violation consequences and escalation procedures to the superintendent's administrative procedures and site-level implementation. Board members cautioned that the policy likely will be revisited in the future and asked administration to monitor implementation closely.

The final vote was 4 in favor, 2 opposed.
