Summary
Staff announced a housing resource fair on April 26, a Child Friendly Cities youth action plan to go to council in May, a reopened recruitment round for HRC vacancies and reported limited information about the voluntary dissolution of the Boulder NAACP chapter.
City staff reported several community and program updates at the Human Relations Commission meeting on April 15.
Housing resource fair: Staff said a housing resource fair will be held Saturday, April 26, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway. The event is organized by the City of Boulder, Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) and Boulder Housing Partners; bilingual staff or interpretation services will be available and staff asked commissioners to share the flyer and encourage attendance.
Child Friendly Cities: Staff reported progress on the City of Boulder’s Child Friendly Cities initiative, a partnership with the nonprofit Growing Up Boulder and UNICEF. A youth-developed action plan on three priority areas will be presented to City Council in May; staff noted sale proceeds from the Broncos stadium several years ago are one possible source of one-time funding for implementation decisions to follow.
Recruitment: The boards and commissions recruitment cycle is reopening for a handful of bodies, including the Human Relations Commission. Staff said the commission will operate with four members until recruitment fills the vacant seat; a recruitment committee will meet later in April.
NAACP Boulder County: A commissioner reported that the local NAACP chapter emailed members and said it was dissolving. The commissioner cited a news report that described tensions between the chapter and the city and noted the national NAACP may have procedures that affect whether a local chapter can unilaterally dissolve. Commissioners said they would monitor coverage and provide updates when more information is available.
Other items: Staff said city councilors have expressed interest in a meet-and-greet dinner with the commission; staff will coordinate logistics and clarify scope before scheduling.
No formal motions were taken on these staff updates; staff said they will provide flyers and links and will follow up on recruitment and council outreach.
