Summary
Staff announced a housing resource fair for April 26, reported progress on the Child Friendly Cities youth action plan to be presented to council in May, and said HRC recruitment has been reopened.
City staff provided several brief updates to the Human Relations Commission at the April 15 meeting.
Housing resource fair: Staff announced a housing-resource fair co-hosted by the City of Boulder, Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) and Boulder Housing Partners on Saturday, April 26, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway. Staff said bilingual staff or interpretation services would be available and encouraged commissioners to attend and share the event flyer.
Child Friendly Cities: Staff said the city’s Child Friendly Cities initiative — a partnership with Growing Up Boulder and UNICEF International — has youth participants who have turned priority ideas into a youth action plan. Staff said that youth-action plan will be presented to Boulder City Council in May; the plan is intended to inform how one-time funds from a prior stadium sale might be used to support youth priorities.
Recruitment and council engagement: Staff said the recruitment cycle for boards and commissions has reopened and the HRC currently does not have a replacement for a departing member; the commission will operate with four members until recruitment concludes. Staff also said city councilors expressed interest in a dinner and meet-and-greet with HRC commissioners; staff will coordinate timing and scope with the City Manager’s Office and report back.
NAACP Boulder County: Commissioners noted local reporting that the NAACP Boulder County chapter sent an email saying it was dissolving. A commissioner said the chapter described tensions with the city in its message and that reporting indicated some dispute with national chapter rules; staff said they would monitor developments and share reliable updates when available.
Other items: Staff repeated a call for commissioners to recruit potential applicants for upcoming vacancies and mentioned the Boulder One Read author event (See No Stranger by Valarie Kaur) on April 24 at the Boulder Public Library. Commissioners approved corrected meeting minutes at the meeting with staff directed to correct a date error before final signatures.
