Board previews convocation center operator selection; foundation to execute management contract

Board members asked procedural and oversight questions: several members asked what the next steps would be after board approval, whether only two bids were received, and why one bidder’s price was low. Staff confirmed only two bids responded and one was judged too low and lacking demonstrated experience. Members pressed for financial documents and clarified that the foundation—an independent nonprofit—would execute the contract and disburse funds; staff said the foundation will coordinate operations and revenue flows.
Several board members emphasized that district events that traditionally have been free to the board or district (graduations, district‑run ceremonies) should not result in new rental fees or charges to the school district. Staff said those concerns will be part of final contract negotiations and that further financial detail would be presented to the board before final approval.
No final contract was executed at this meeting; staff said a formal contract award and board action will be considered at the next scheduled meeting.
