Local composting firm highlights school programs and Good Neighbor pilot during public comment

During the public-comment period May 6, Heather Lane Neville and representatives of Indian Head composting described an ongoing local biosolids and municipal compost operation and its recent public-education pilot projects.

Neville, a business owner who said she has worked with the local biosolids composting company for several years, said the firm began operations in 2009 and expanded compost production in 2018. She described a “Good Neighbor” pilot that began last year and an educational pilot at R. B. Hunt elementary (an edible garden demonstrating compost benefits versus fertilizer). Neville said the company is coordinating monthly briefings to local leaders, has supported government compliance with state legislation on organic waste and invited commissioners and staff to tour the Indian Head site.

Separately, Tim Decker and Skyler Seifker of St. Augustine Youth Services accepted the city’s proclamation of National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month and thanked the commission for recognition. Those remarks were part of the presentation portion of the agenda.

Commissioners thanked speakers and staff for outreach work. Staff said they would follow up on invitations for tours and updates. No formal city action was taken during the public-comment period.
