Council votes: zoning map change, garbage, parking code changes and other routine measures approved
Summary
Cedar Falls City Council on Aug. 18 approved a series of ordinances and administrative items including a zoning map amendment, updates to garbage and parking codes, a payroll technician job-class revision and set public hearings for building-code and nuisance amendments.
At its Aug. 18 meeting the Cedar Falls City Council approved several ordinances, personnel and administrative items with limited debate. Key votes and outcomes follow.
- Zoning map amendment (Ordinance No. 3120): Council passed the rezoning (third and final consideration) to change approximately 0.69 acres south of Quail Hollow Lane and north of the new Cedar Falls High School from P (Public) to R-2 (Residence). Vote: 6–1 in favor.
- Amendments to Chapter 10 (garbage and refuse) (Ordinance No. 3121): Passed on third consideration; roll-call approval recorded as all members voting aye.
- Amendments to Chapter 23 (traffic and motor vehicles) re: parking prohibited on specific streets (Ordinance No. 3122): Passed on second consideration; roll-call approval recorded as all members voting aye.
- Payroll technician job classification: Council approved a revised job classification for payroll technician; staff explained the position may require occasional driving for training or bank deposits. Council approved the classification by roll call.
- Building-code amendments (adoption of updated national codes / electrical): Council set Sept. 2, 2025 as the public-hearing date for proposed amendments to Chapter 7 (buildings and building regulations). Vote to set the hearing date recorded 5–2.
- Nuisance code amendments: Council set Sept. 2, 2025 as the public-hearing date for proposed amendments to Chapter 15 (nuisances). The clerk recorded the vote; council discussion requested further review but the motion to set the date carried.
- Consent calendar and resolutions: The council approved the consent calendar (items 9–14 with some items pulled); the resolution calendar (items 15–24, excluding items pulled for separate consideration) was also adopted by roll call. Bills and claims for the period were approved by roll call.
Most items drew little public comment. Councilors who voted no on particular items cited concerns about process or the need for additional stakeholder review; staff will return with required follow-ups where noted.
