The LGO’s Geospatial Information Systems Division (GISD) reported completion of the St. John street addressing initiative, plans to finish territorywide addressing, and FEMA‑funded benchmark network work to improve surveying coordinates.
Administrator L. Chris George told the committee that GISD has completed the St. John street addressing initiative and will work to finish Saint Thomas, Saint Croix and Water Island to achieve a territorywide street addressing system. George said the final phase of the street addressing initiative is federally funded (no local match) and will support manufacturing and installation of street name signs and integration with 911 and USPS address databases.
The division also reported completion of phase 1 of a FEMA‑funded benchmark network project that installed more than 18 NOAA National Geodetic Survey markers. Phase 2 would place additional survey benchmarks in residential and estate areas to provide accurate latitudes, longitudes and elevations to support construction, civil surveying and GPS resilience.
George said GISD has partnerships with USPS, VITEMA, the 911 system and the Department of Public Works and will continue street‑naming outreach with neighborhoods and homeowners associations. He said GISD expects $4,590,519.03 in federal funding for FY2026 to support street addressing and related initiatives and noted the work’s importance for emergency response and infrastructure projects.
