County suspends beach parking fees while limited access continues

The Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on April 8 to suspend vehicle parking fees at county beaches while public access remains limited due to recovery work.
Community Services Director Tommy Scott asked the board to suspend parking fees required by county ordinance because the county is operating limited beach access during phased reopenings; staff reported that mobile “park” transactions had fallen sharply at affected parks and that enforcement capacity is limited while recovery and construction work continues. Commissioners expressed concern about equity (some residents pay annual passes) and enforcement practicality; several asked for a later briefing on the budgetary impact and enforcement plans.
The board approved the suspension and directed staff to return with fiscal analysis and a recommended timetable for resuming any fee program or alternate approaches, such as resident decals or differential pricing, so the board could evaluate impacts before the next budget cycle.
