Pharr public health: vector control after storms and environmental education for students

Nico Topangan, public health director for the City of Pharr, said the public-health department has continued vector-control work after recent storms, including spraying across the city and larviciding standing water in areas with elevated complaints.
Topangan said the city sprayed last Monday and last Friday and is prioritizing larviciding where standing water remains and complaint levels are higher. The department will continue to respond to complaints and target locations with elevated mosquito activity.
Environmental educator Selena Saenz described recent outreach in schools (kindergarten through fifth grade) including lessons on saving energy and hands-on crafts such as glow-in-the-dark light-bulb projects, leaf-print painting, and monarch-butterfly activities made from colored coffee filters. Saenz said she collaborates with Parks & Recreation and the schoolyard-forestry program and is working to extend outreach into summer programs.
