County mayor reports downtown infrastructure steps, summer programs, library events and apprenticeship graduation

The Salt Lake County mayor used the April 8 council meeting to summarize a series of county and regional updates, including next steps for a downtown public infrastructure district, a state committee decision on a county partnership application, seasonal program registration and upcoming community events.

The mayor said Salt Lake City had taken a necessary step by approving a public infrastructure district; the city was set to take a second vote the same night and, if approved, the district would create a funding mechanism for downtown district improvements. The mayor also said the state HTRZ Committee approved the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity CCRZ application on Friday; the county had been a partner on that application, the mayor reported.

Parks and recreation registration is open for summer programs, the mayor said, including camps, clinics, swim lessons and track and field opportunities. The mayor also noted that ZAP tier 1 and zoological applications are open through May (tier 2 remains open until April 30) and that the Westside Culture Fest — a free two‑day arts and community celebration — is in planning; vendor and performer applications for the festival close April 8.

Library events highlighted by the mayor included an All Ability Discovery event on April 18 at the Bradeen Event Center focused on individuals with intellectual disabilities and the Tumbleweeds Film Festival on April 26 for young audiences. The mayor also flagged that staff at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (a federal agency that awards grants) were placed on leave; while the county library receives little federal funding, the mayor said the leave could affect Utah’s state library system and smaller rural libraries that rely on federal support.

Other items: a pre‑apprenticeship graduation is scheduled for April 11 at 3 p.m. at the South Salt Lake Community Center for students who completed a 120‑hour course preparing them for construction apprenticeships, and the county events page URL was provided as slc0.to/calendar.
