Sheriff's office reports jail population, DOC arrears and extra costs on pool building project

Travis, representing the sheriff's office, delivered the annual jail report the council must file by statute and provided operational updates including two recent resignations from merit deputy positions and the current inmate population.
"We invoice for $103,205 for the month of February," Travis said, providing February billing figures. He reported the jail population on the day prior to the meeting was 106 inmates, including federal and out-of-county detainees.
Travis told council members that the Department of Correction (DOC) has been slow to pay counties for inmates and that the county's share for DOC housing through the recent period was approximately $19,800 (DOC billings discussed in the meeting). He also described progress on a pool building project where site-prep errors increased projected concrete and other costs. Travis said staff are preparing a request for an additional appropriation and that they plan to use the jail maintenance fund to cover the overrun; he noted the jail maintenance fund had approximately $255,000 available at the last check.
The sheriff's office said it has job applications open and plans testing and background work in April to fill vacancies and expects to present candidates to the merit board at the April meeting. Council members asked staff to provide a formal appropriation request with exact figures when available.
No formal appropriation on the pool building was approved at the March 18 meeting; staff said they will return with a figure for council approval.
