Committee requires expanded reporting for safe-harbor program evaluation

House File 129 would require the director of child trafficking prevention to submit the statewide safe-harbor program evaluation to legislative health and public safety committee leaders in odd-numbered years, expanding the report recipients beyond the commissioner of health.
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee recommended House File 129 to pass and placed it on general orders after a brief presentation by Sen. Annette Otke.
Sen. Otke described the bill as a limited change to existing reporting requirements for the director of child trafficking prevention, who administers the safe-harbor program for sexually exploited youth. The bill expands the report's distribution from the commissioner of health to also include the chairs and ranking minority members of the Senate and House committees with jurisdiction over health and public safety in odd-numbered years.
"All this bill does is it just expands who receives this report," Sen. Otke said. She told the committee she had no testifiers signed up and described the proposal as a straightforward administrative change to improve legislative oversight and transparency.
Members raised no objections. Sen. Otke moved the measure; the committee approved it by voice vote and placed House File 129 on general orders.
