Kossuth County awards $4.86 million contract for three road resurfacing projects

Kossuth County's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to accept a low bid of $4,859,560.73 from Mathy Construction Company to complete three 2025 secondary road resurfacing projects.

The projects include resurfacing segments identified in county plans: the Bridal from Highway 18 to B63, the Irvington pavement segment from U.S. 169 east to La Verne Sexton Road, and Hannah Road (B63) from La Verne Sexton Road to Highway 17. County staff told the board the projects were programmed in the county’s best interest and that the estimated total for the three projects had been $5,912,530, making the accepted bid roughly $1.05 million below estimate.

The board heard that the Irvington project is federally funded and the other segments are funded through farm-to-market (state/federal) programs administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation; none of the contract cost will be charged to the county’s local operating budget. After accepting the bid, county staff were authorized to sign contract documents once all required paperwork is submitted.

Board members asked about timing and construction logistics; staff said contractors typically begin work after frost season and must allow time to crush aggregate and prepare materials, so construction was expected to start in late spring (April–May) depending on weather and contractor scheduling.

The motion to accept the low bid and authorize contract signature passed on a roll-call vote recorded in the meeting minutes as all present supervisors voting yes.
