Springfield SD SLC students showcase classroom work, principals and staff praise program

Students from Springfield School District’s SLC program presented projects and spoke briefly to the board during the opening portion of the meeting, offering board members a look at classroom routines, academic strategies and extracurricular activities.

"At the SLC, teachers are kind, classrooms are special, and being a principal is a pretty big deal," said Mr. Robinson, the SLC principal who introduced the student presentations. Students described morning meeting routines, reading strategies, science dioramas, community-focused social studies lessons and math problem-solving approaches. "Morning meeting includes a greeting, sharing, activity, and announcements about the day," said Miss Stewart, describing a daily practice that staff said helps students set goals and prepare for learning.

Students demonstrated classroom techniques and shared examples: Mr. Q described strategies to break down words and sound them out; Miss Dixon displayed an Arctic-habitat diorama; "Something that helps us remember how to solve word problems is CUBS," explained Mr. Neville (C — circle the key numbers; U — underline the question sentence; B — box the key words; S — solve and check). Mrs. Shelford spoke about clubs and specials such as art, music and PE, and noted a recent performance that included high school cheerleaders.

Superintendent Dr. Barber praised the students and SLC staff after the presentation, saying: "The work that you do is incredible. To see the joy in our students' faces ... thank you so much." Board members and attendees applauded the students and invited them forward to take photos.

Why it matters: The presentation gave trustees and the public a direct look at daily instructional practices and student engagement in a small-school setting; district leaders framed the visit as evidence of the SLC’s role in early elementary learning and campus culture.

Speakers at the presentation included SLC instructional staff and students; the presentation preceded the board’s business items and was explicitly a student showcase rather than a decision item.
