Judiciary forms AI task force, circulates draft model-use policy for public comment

Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero told the joint session that the judicial branch has formed a task force to study and recommend rules for the use of generative artificial intelligence in courts.
Guerrero said she appointed a task force led by Administrative Presiding Justice Brad Hill, working with Administrative Presiding Justice Mary Greenwood and Judge Arturo Castro, along with Judicial Council members. The task force has developed a model use policy intended to outline guardrails for safely using generative AI and has circulated a draft rule of court for public comment.
She said the Judicial Council will vote on a recommended rule later this year and that the task force has developed guidance for judges who may use generative AI in their adjudicative role. Guerrero described the work as ongoing and urged a deliberative approach to ensure court users are protected as the branch implements generative AI.
The chief justice characterized the effort as proactive stewardship to protect court users and to provide consistent guardrails for staff and judicial officers as AI tools are introduced into court operations.
