Washington County commissioners review planning work program, prioritize housing, transportation and code updates

Washington County planning staff briefed the Board of Commissioners on March 18 about the status of the department’s current 2023–25 biennial planning work program and proposed priorities for the 2025–27 cycle.

The briefing summarized completed work — including a multi‑year regulatory update that culminated in an ordinance adopted in November and effective Dec. 5 — and outlined mandatory tasks the county must complete because of state and regional requirements, plus discretionary projects staff would like to pursue next biennium. Assistant Director Erin Wardell told the board the program balances “our resources, both in terms of staff and budget” while responding to legal requirements, Metro coordination and community requests.

Why it matters: county planners are responsible for implementing state mandates and regional requirements that affect housing capacity, transportation funding and land‑use rules across the county. Several tasks under discussion could lead to ordinances, code amendments or large multi‑year projects that require board authorization and staff time.
