Leander planning commission backs ordinance to update short-form plats and application extensions

The City of Leander Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday recommended approval of Ordinance case OR-25-28, an amendment to the city’s subdivision ordinance that removes a four-lot limit on expedited short-form final plats and creates a formal extension process for expiring subdivision applications.
City planning staff presented the proposed ordinance as the first step in the city’s ordinance process. Karina Castillo of the Planning Department said, “The local government code was amended recently to remove the 4 lot maximum for these types of plat, and this amendment would include to update the ordinance to also remove that 4 lot maximum.” Castillo also described an added administrative extension mechanism so the commission can grant extensions for subdivision applications that would otherwise expire.
The proposal drew no public speakers during the hearing. Commissioners had no substantive questions about the amendment during the discussion. Vice Chair Colon moved to approve the ordinance recommendation and Commissioner Morales seconded; the commission approved the recommendation and the item will move to city council for final action.
The change would align Leander’s subdivision ordinance with recent changes to the state local government code and establish a local process for application extensions. City staff said further implementation details and any technical changes would be handled as the ordinance proceeds through the council review and adoption process.
