County insurance costs dip; officials plan GLP‑1 employee program using Ozempic contract

Charles told the committee that April’s total insurance cost fell to $677,000 from about $925,000 the previous month. “That’s a pretty substantial decrease,” he said, noting that claims can be volatile and that a single long hospital stay can dramatically alter monthly totals.
He described a county plan developed with the human-resources director to offer GLP‑1 therapy to eligible employees to reduce long-term pharmacy spending and improve health outcomes. Charles said the program originally planned to use compounded drugs, but an FDA determination about shortages prevented that approach. “We were able to find a way to contract directly with Novo Nordisk on the Ozempic drug. So that's back on track, and we believe we'll have that implemented hopefully by August 1,” he said.
Charles said GLP‑1 drugs represented 18.2 percent of the county’s pharmacy spend last year and that helping employees into remission from type 2 diabetes could lower future drug costs and related medical events.
He cautioned that claim costs will continue to be uncertain month to month; the committee offered no objection and accepted the update.
