Valley County authorizes grant application for Sampson Trail Phase 2

The Valley County Board of Commissioners authorized staff May 19 to submit an application to the Stib Knight Foundation seeking $10,000 for Sampson Trail Phase 2.
Grant writer Ken Schlegel told the board the county is still far from fully funding the project and estimated a remaining gap of $200,000 to $300,000. Schlegel said the county had already secured a $250,000 pedestrian safety grant from LTAC and had a McCall Rotary contribution of $1,200 and a Valley County Pathways pledge to fundraise $50,000 toward the project. The county will also solicit new contractor bids and pursue other grants and fundraising to reduce the overall estimated need.
The motion to authorize the application passed by voice vote. Schlegel will prepare and submit the Stib Knight Foundation application; commissioners asked staff to return with updates on other fundraising and any grant awards prior to final construction authorization.
Why it matters: The trail project is intended to extend local pedestrian infrastructure; the $10,000 request is one of multiple funding steps needed to close a substantial remaining gap.
