Macomb Community Action receives $744,771 LIHEAP boost for weatherization work

The committee recommended a budget amendment that increases Macomb Community Action’s LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) weatherization funding by $744,771.

Adam (last name not provided), representing Macomb Community Action, told the committee LIHEAP is a federal program passed through the state and that Macomb typically receives fluctuating allocations during the fiscal year. He said the county uses LIHEAP dollars to provide weatherization services — including furnace repair or replacement, insulation, windows and related measures — rather than to pay utility bills directly under this program.

Adam said the agency runs a waiting list for weatherization work that is roughly three months for new applicants. He also said about $52,000 of the additional allocation would cover administrative and operations costs associated with delivering the program. Adam reported that approximately 85% of Macomb Community Action’s overall budget is federally funded and that the agency’s total budget is near $32 million with about $6 million from the county general fund.

Commissioners praised the agency’s work and asked for service counts; Adam said he would provide figures on jobs completed and the current backlog. The committee voted 13–0 to recommend the amendment to the full board.
