Elbert County staff brief commissioners on audit season, training and potential new code enforcement post

A county staff member provided a housekeeping briefing to the board, saying auditors will be in county offices this week and next and that department heads should review their budgets and begin planning for next year.
The staff member described ongoing facility repairs and storm-related damage assessments, including hail damage and roof inspections. "Staff is getting the estimates on that stuff from insurance," the speaker said, and added that public-works staff will inventory vehicles and catalog storm damage.
The speaker also described a staff training initiative based on the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" materials and said the county has started picking training topics, including communication techniques such as "seek first to understand and then be understood." The speaker said the training aims to improve collaboration across departments.
The chairman said the county is working with the sheriff's office on creating a combined code enforcement and animal control position to better respond to enforcement calls and animal-control needs, and that Monty and his team were addressing flooding issues on Main Street in the town of Elbert.
On building-code fees, the chairman said the item to approve an updated International Building Code fee schedule will be moved to the next board meeting. A commissioner asked the county manager to compile final revenue and permit figures from the building department finance team before the board considers the fee schedule.
No formal votes were taken on new hires or the building-code fee schedule at this meeting; the board asked for additional financial data before action.
